May 13, 1917, Kova da Iria, area in a village in Central Portugal, Fatima. Three children – 10-year-old Lucia dos Santos and her 9- and 7-year-old cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto, sister and brother – were playing with each other as they were grazing a small flock of sheep in a pasture owned by Lucia’s father.
Near noon, after reciting prayers as usual, they saw two bright phenomena, like two powerful lamps, and then a mysterious Bright Lady with a Rosary in hand. It is the first appearance of 6 such that the 3 little shepherds will see by October of that year.
Always on the 13th, except in August, when on the 13th and 15th they were “kidnapped” by the mayor trying to unmask what he believes is a hoax (then St. Mary will reappear to 3 children on the 19th. August). On October 13, 1930, the Bishop of Leiria declared his visions “worthy of trust,” authorizing the birth of the cult of Our Lady of Fatima.
The miracle of the Sun.
As soon as rumors spread about these supernatural events, thousands of pilgrims began to arrive in Fatima. On October 13, 1917, a crowd of 30,000 to 100,000 people, including many journalists, witnessed the “Miracle of the Sun,” the great sign foretold by the Virgin Mary: after a great rainstorm, which rained down to the marrow. the earth and the clothes of the people, the sky opened and the Solar disk was seen to change color, size and position for about 10 minutes. It was a phenomenon that could be seen directly by all present. After that event, the clothes and the ground were suddenly dry again.
A secret divided into 3 parts
The main message of those supernatural performances was related to 3 secrets, or more precisely to a 3-part revelation that St. Mary made to the little shepherds at the show on July 13, 1917. Lucia, who later became a nun, wrote the 2 parts first in her memoirs. The third, he wrote on January 3, 1944, and gave it in a sealed envelope to the bishop of Leiria. Her confession was handed over in 1957 to the secret archives of the Holy See in the Vatican, and the contents of the testimony were only discovered in 2000.
In the first part of the secret, Sister Lucia says that St. Mary showed the 3 shepherd children “a large sea of fire, which seemed to lie underground.” “Immersed in that fire, demons and spirits, as if transparent and in black or bronze, had human forms and swam in the fire… Demons were distinguished by the forms of animals that were scary or unknown to children. This vision lasted a moment. And it was thanks to our good Mother of Heaven, who had previously promised to take us to Heaven (in the first show), as otherwise I think I would
we would have died of fear and terror. ”
Russia and the Immaculate Heart
The second part contains the following words of Mary: “You have seen Hell where the souls of sinful sinners fall. In order to save them, God wants to establish devotion to My Immaculate Heart in the world. If people do what I tell you, many souls will be saved and have peace. The war will end. But if they do not stop offending God, during the papacy of Pius XI, another, even worse war will break out.
When you see a night illuminated by an unknown light, know that it is the great sign that the Lord is giving you, that He will punish the world for its crimes, through war, famine, and the persecution of the Church and the Holy Father. To prevent this, I will seek the sanctification of Russia in My Immaculate Heart, and the Communion of the Exodus on the first Saturdays.
If they accept my demands, Russia will convert and they will have peace. If not, it will spread its errors around the world, promoting wars and persecution against the Church. The good will be martyred, the Holy Father will suffer a lot, different places will be destroyed. But in the end, My Immaculate Heart will triumph. “The Holy Father will sanctify Russia, which will be converted, and a period of peace will be given to the world.”
Bishop dressed in white
The third part of the secret is reported by Sister Lucia: “After the two parts I have already shown, we saw a little above the left of our Lady an Angel, with a sword of fire in her left hand. His sword emitted sparks, which seemed to be setting the world on fire.
But they were extinguished in contact with the radiance Our Lady emitted from her right hand: The angel pointing to the Earth with his right hand, said aloud: Punishment, punishment, punishment! And we saw in an extraordinary light that is the Lord: Something like how people see themselves in a mirror when they pass by it, ”said a white-clad bishop. We had the feeling that he was the Holy Father.
Other bishops, priests, men, and women of faith were climbing a steep mountain with a large cross on top of it. Before reaching them, the Holy Father passed through a large city, half-ruined. Touched by the pain, he prayed for the souls of the dead he encountered along the way.
When he reached the top of the mountain, he knelt before the Great Cross, and was killed by a group of soldiers who shot him several times. In the same way the priests died bishops, men and women believers, but also different secular people, men and women of different strata and positions. Under the two wings of the Cross were two Angels, each with a crystal vessel in his hand, with which they collected the blood of the Martyrs, and with them watered the souls who approached the Lord.
The life of visionaries
The little shepherds reported that Maria had spoken of the untimely death of Francisco and and Jacinta, adding that Lucia would stay on Earth for a long time. And so it happened. Francisco fell ill with the Spanish flu in December 1918. He initially coped well with the disease, and did the First Communion during that period.
But he died on April 4, 1919. Jackinta was also affected by the Spanish Influenza in December 1918. Her illness was longer and more painful than that of her brother. Jakinta was admitted to the hospital in Lisbon, but to no avail, after which he died on February 20, 1920. Sister Lucia entered the monastery of St. Murgrsha of Dorothea in 1925, and in 1948 moved to the Carmelite monastery of Koimbra. She remained there until her death in 2005.
Reasons for happiness and sanctification
The process of happiness of Francisco and Jakinta Marto began in the diocese of Leiria in 1952: Francisco and Jakinta were happy on May 13, 2000 by Pope John Paul II, and have already been canonized by Pope Francis. Meanwhile, the process of consecration of Sister Lucia began in 2008, and ended the first phase in the diocese of Koimbra in January 2017.
Popes and Fatima
On May 13, 1917, on the day of the first performance, Eugenio Pacelli was appointed bishop. As Pope he would have a special reverence for the Lady of Fatima. On May 13, 1967, Pope Paul VI went on a pilgrimage to Fatima. The same happened to Pope John Paul II in 1982, 1991 and 2000.
For Wojtyla, it was Fatima’s Virgo who saved her life during the assassination attempt on him on May 13, 1981. Benedict XVI also visited Fatima in 2010. Angelo Ronkali and Albino Luciani also visited the Portuguese holy site, but as cardinals and not the Pope. : the first in 1956, and the second in 1977. / L’Avennire
