There is some evidence that short-sighted people have a higher IQ than the average, which may be because the same genes affect the eyes and the brain. Appearance defects such as myopia (people look close and not far away) are not caused by a single gene. Visual defects often have environmental causes as well. Myopia is more common in people who do a lot of delicate work, have saturated fats in their diet, and sleep with the lights on. These are relatively all innovations in our evolutionary history./
